Why counts take days

Ballots → counts → certification
  1. Polls close

Each state sets its own closing hour. Early and mail ballots are often counted first or last, so early totals can swing.

  2. Mail ballots arrive

Some states count ballots postmarked by Election Day that arrive days later. In June 2026 the Supreme Court held, in a Mississippi case, that federal law allows this. Other states require receipt by Election Day.

  3. Canvass

Local boards verify signatures, let voters fix defects where state law allows, and decide provisional ballots.

  4. Certification

State officials certify the totals by a legal deadline that ranges from days to over a month after the election. Only then is the result official.

  5. Recounts and runoffs

A close margin can trigger an automatic or requested recount. Georgia holds a runoff when nobody wins a majority; Louisiana House races can go to a December round.

A news outlet can call a race before the result is official. Election officials check and certify the totals. Mail ballots and recounts can take more time. Each state sets its own rules.

Alaska uses ranked-choice voting in general elections. Maine uses it in federal general elections. If no one wins a majority of first choices, counting may go to another round.

Georgia holds a runoff if no candidate wins a majority. In Louisiana in 2026, Senate party primaries come before the November general election. House races have an open primary in November and a runoff in December if needed.

Party groups choose leaders and organize committee work. Independent senators Angus King and Bernie Sanders meet with the Democrats. House control decides the Speaker and how committees are set up. Senate control also shapes its leaders and committees.
